Are you new to makeup and need some guidance as to what to purchase and how to apply it?
If yes, then I am here to tell you all you need to know about the basics of makeup and what you need to create a natural beauty look.
To start off, you will need a number of basic products - face primer, foundation, BB cream, eyeshadow, mascara, lip balm, lipgloss, and makeup brushes. I will go through how and when to use each of these products, as well as recommend my faves!
1. Face Primer
When to use it: Face primer is applied before foundation or BB cream.
What it does: It creates a barrier between your skin and makeup, and creates a smoother surface to work on. It also allows your makeup to stay on longer, so it is definitely worth the purchase. You may think that it is not worthwhile, but it makes a great difference to make-up application.
Application: You can apply it by taking a pea sized amount, spreading it between two fingers, and then spreading it across your face, just like you would moisturiser. It is best to let it sink in a bit before applying foundation or BB cream.
My favourite products & pricing: Face primers span across a large price range, however I generally spend between $20-$30 on a good quality primer. My favourites are NP Set Pre-Foundation Pore Perfecting Primer $33 (pictured above), Bare Minerals Prime Time $28.45 , and Revlon PhotoReady Perfecting Primer $30
When to use it: Foundation is typically applied after primer or on its own. It can be worn everyday, however, I recommend it not be worn daily as it is quite heavy on the skin. BB cream is much lighter and is more suitable for daily use.
What it does: Foundation evens out skin tone and conceals imperfections. It ranges from light-full coverage.
Application: Foundation can be applied a number of ways, either with your fingers, a foundation brush, or a foundation sponge. For the most natural look, your fingers are best as the heat from your hands will allow the foundation to sink in a little better. Brushes and sponges are also useful, and will create an airbrushed effect if applied correctly. It is always best to start with a small amount of foundation and create an even layer on your skin before building it up to provide more coverage (if needed).
My favourite products & pricing: Foundation, like most other makeup products spans along a large price range. The least expensive can be found at drugstores, while higher end products can be found at department stores. I typically spend between $20-$40 on a foundation. My favourites are Covergirl Outlast Stay Fabulous 3-in-1 Foundation $19.95 (pictured above) , NP Set It Takes Two Concealer and Foundation Pot $38, and Revlon Photoready Makeup $36.95
3. BB Cream
When to use it: BB cream can be worn daily. The coverage is quite light.
What it does: BB cream is a lighter alternative to foundation. It is basically a tinted moisturiser with a number of other benefits for your skin, such as anti-aging qualities and the blurring of imperfections. A number of BB creams also contain SPF to protect your skin from the sun.
Application: BB cream is generally applied with your fingers as its consistency is quite thin and light. You can apply it between two fingers and then spread it across your face. It is better to pat the product on as it will allow it to sink into your skin. If you rub it, you are practically wiping the makeup off.
My favourite products + pricing: BB creams are generally quite inexpensive. I typically spend between $8 - $15 on a BB cream. My all time favourite BB creams are the Maybelline Dream Fresh BB cream $11 (pictured above) and the Maybelline Dream Pure BB cream $11. The Dream Pure BB cream comes with the added benefit of salicylic acid for acne prone skin.
What it does: Eyeshadow adds drama to your makeup look and enhances your eyes.
When to use it: Eyeshadow can be worn everyday, however most people tend to save it for special occassions such as parties and formal events. If you intend to wear eyeshadow on a daily basis, then you should definitely opt for neutral colours such as brown and beige.
Application: For step by step instructions for how to apply eyeshadow, click here
My favourite products + pricing: I love eyeshadow, however, I generally opt for neutral colours as they are more versatile. My favourite eyeshadows are Urban Decay Naked 3 Palette $54, and MAC Mix & Switch Mineralize Eyeshadow $15 (pictured above).
What it does: Mascara coats your eyelashes and essentially lengthens and makes them more voluminous.
When to use it: Mascara can be worn daily and/or for special occasions.
Application: Using the wand provided with the mascara, swipe it over your lashes until each lash is coated with the product. You can swipe the wand over your lashes as many times as you would like until you achieve your desired look. Mascara can be applied on both the top and bottom lashes, however it is best to only apply a small amount on the bottom lashes in order to achieve a more natural look.
My favourite products + pricing: The best mascara that I have ever used is the Benefit They're Real Mascara $38 (pictured above). It lengthens and adds volume to your lashes, making it look as though you are wearing fake lashes. Another great product is Maybelline's The Rocket Mascara $10. It creates a very natural, flirty look.
What it does: Lipbalm adds moisture to your lips, preventing dryness and cracking. It can also be used to finish off a natural looking makeup look.
When to use it: Lipbalm can be used daily, either alone or over lip tint or lipstick.
Application: Swipe the balm over your lips.
My favourite products + pricing: Lip balms are available everywhere and have the greatest price span out of all the makeup products. My favourite lip balms are Maybelline Baby Lips Lip Balm $4 (pictured above), and eos Smooth Sphere Lip Balm in Summer Fruits $3.29.
What it does: Tinted lipgloss adds colour to your lips, while clear lipgloss adds shine.
When to use it: Lipgloss can be used daily, either alone or over lip tint or lipstick.
Application: Swipe the lipgloss over your lips.
My favourite products + pricing: NYX Mega Shine Lipgloss in Beige $5 (pictured above), Sephora Ultra Shine Lipgloss $14, Buxom Full On Lip Cream $19, and Victoria's Secret Shiny Kiss Lip Gloss $8
8. Makeup Brushes
What they do: Makeup brushes allow for the easy application of makeup.
When to use them: Makeup brushes are specifically designed for different makeup application. There are makeup brushes for eyeshadow, foundation, blush, face powder, bronzer, and more. They should be used according to their need. Youtube tutorials should help you with figuring out how to use each brush as my explanation probably won't suffice.
Step by Step Everyday Makeup Tutorial
Follow the steps below to create a natural everyday makeup look using the products mentioned above.
1. Start by applying primer to your face. Leave it for a few minutes to sink into your skin.
2. Apply a thin layer of BB cream to your face using your fingers. It will even out your skin tone and conceal imperfections. If you would like more coverage, apply another layer after the first has set (basically, wait a few minutes until the makeup is not as wet to the touch).
3. OPTIONAL* If the coverage is still not enough, use a concealer to cover any imperfections still showing. This can be done by either using a concealer brush, your fingers, or a wand that comes with the concealer. Read my post on essential face products to find out what my favourite concealers are. You can also complete your face look by applying a thin layer of face powder with a powder brush - pat on the product instead of sweeping. Sweeping makes the rest of your makeup move.
4. Apply a few coats of mascara for a dramatic effect, and optionally some eyeshadow.
5. Finish with a coat of lipgloss or lipbalm.
6. Voila! You are done!
NOTE: This is a very simple makeup look for beginners. If you are more competent with makeup and would like a more made up look, you can add eyeliner, blush, highlighter, bronzer, and fill in your eyebrows.
Hopefully I have been able to help you with learning to apply makeup. These products are good to start with if you are planning to build up your collection as they are very versatile, and most can be used on a day-to-day basis.
